Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence

According to the CDC and WHO, 1 in 3 American men will experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence—most often at the hands of someone they know.

But domestic abuse goes beyond physical and sexual violence. It also includes emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, financial control, and legal abuse—forms that are often hidden but equally harmful.

I’m Ingrid Dutton, and as a survivor of domestic violence, I use my voice to break the silence. Each week on this podcast, I share real stories that span the full spectrum of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence. I’ll be joined by fellow survivors, family members, and professionals in the field to explore the realities of abuse, recovery, and resilience.

Subscribe now and join the movement to break the silence.

About the Host

Ingrid Profile Photo

Ingrid

I’ve always been passionate—and a little bit stubborn—ever since I was a child. Born in Georgia, raised in Wisconsin, educated in Minnesota, and having built my nursing career in Florida, I now call Tennessee home. My life is full: I’m a mom to three amazing kids, share my space with three lively dogs, work full-time, and now host not just one, but THREE podcasts.

In my free time, I love to garden, stay active, read, and spend time with the incredible people in my life. These are the same people who stood by me during one of the darkest chapters I’ve ever faced—my personal experience with domestic violence. Their support helped me survive and heal. In turn, some of them shared their own stories of abuse. Hearing those stories shattered me, but it also lit a fire in me—one rooted in the very same stubborn determination that’s always been a part of me.

That fire led to research, reflection, and ultimately, action. When I discovered just how widespread domestic violence is—1 in 3 women globally, 1 in 3 men in the U.S.—I knew I had to do something. That’s how 1 in 3 was born: a platform for survivors, friends, and families to share their truths, break the silence, and feel seen.

Because here’s the truth: part of healing is knowing you're not alone. Part of escaping a dangerous situation is knowing that it’s possible—and that others have done it too. Every survivor who chooses to tell their story brings strength, perspective, and hope to someone else’s journey. Their courage is deeply inspiring.

Healing looks different for everyone. For me, it’s come through therapy, humor, and music. I even created a public Spotify playlist to help others the way music helped me—you can find the link on this site. It’s still growing, and I’d love for you to contribute a song that helped you heal. You'll also find a Resources tab with crisis support and help, should you or someone you know need it.

💜 It’s not your fault. There is hope. Stay strong and wherever you are in your journey, always remember, you are not alone. 💜
