In this episode of 1 in 3, host Ingrid kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) with a clear, practical roadmap for how each of us can show up—visibly, safely, and meaningfully. When the calendar flips to October, the air changes: it’s time to bring domestic violence awareness out of the shadows and into our shared care.

We unpack the message behind this year’s theme, “Everyone Knows Someone,” a reminder that abuse is closer than most realize—touching families, workplaces, schools, and faith communities. Then we lean into “With Survivors Always (con sobrevivientes siempre),” a love letter and a call to action asking us to stand with survivors through safety, support, and solidarity.

You’ll hear a short, powerful poem that honors hard choices, small victories, and brave voices, and we trace DVAM’s roots from the 1981 Day of Unity to today’s nationwide movement. Mark your calendar: the National Day of Unity falls on October 6, and Purple Thursday returns on October 16—your chance to wear purple, post a photo, and amplify #DVAM.

You’ll also hear about 1 in 3's merch, featuring the purple ribbon and the message “you are not alone,” perfect for Purple Thursday and beyond. Whether you’re a survivor, an ally, or a community leader, this episode is your guide to turning domestic violence awareness into daily action and connection.

Subscribe for the full DVAM-aligned lineup, share this episode with someone who might need it, and leave a review to help more people find resources, safety, and support when it matters most.

WEBVTT

00:00:23.500 --> 00:00:25.420
Hey Warriors, Ingrid here.

00:00:25.579 --> 00:00:30.219
I'm popping into your feed a few days early with some quick updates.

00:00:30.460 --> 00:00:35.019
Don't worry, the regular 1 and 3 episode will still drop this Wednesday.

00:00:35.340 --> 00:00:43.420
First up, speaking of this Wednesday, October 1st marks the official start to Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

00:00:43.659 --> 00:00:59.420
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is recognized across the United States as a way to raise awareness of domestic violence, educate on its ribble effects not only on the primary victims, but also families, workplaces, and communities.

00:00:59.659 --> 00:01:05.500
It's also to honor and uplift victims and survivors while advocating for change.

00:01:05.740 --> 00:01:13.819
For the fifth year in a row, the National Network to End Domestic Violence is highlighting the theme Everyone Knows Someone.

00:01:14.219 --> 00:01:22.620
It's a haunting reminder that each of us knows someone affected by domestic violence, whether we realize it or not.

00:01:22.859 --> 00:01:30.700
It could be a friend, a family member, a neighbor, a coworker, someone from school or church, even a leader in your community.

00:01:30.859 --> 00:01:42.540
The Domestic Violence Awareness Project has also chosen its own 2025 theme with survivors always, or con sobrevivientes siempre.

00:01:42.939 --> 00:01:57.980
According to the Domestic Violence Awareness Project, the theme is both a love letter and a call to action, asking all of us to stand alongside victims and survivors with safety, support, and solidarity.

00:01:58.219 --> 00:02:05.579
I want to share a short poem by Casey Keene, director of prevention that captures this theme beautifully.

00:02:05.900 --> 00:02:13.819
When it's too dark to see the road ahead, when hopelessness and fear are overwhelming, when everything seems uncertain.

00:02:14.139 --> 00:02:16.780
Dear survivors, I'm with you.

00:02:17.659 --> 00:02:28.379
When you make hard choices to prioritize your well-being, when you celebrate small but meaningful victories, when you bravely raise your voice, dear survivors, I'm with you.

00:02:28.620 --> 00:02:37.740
Domestic Violence Awareness Month began back in 1981 as a single day of unity created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

00:02:37.979 --> 00:02:42.699
Over time, it grew to the month-long observance we know today.

00:02:43.020 --> 00:02:58.539
Since 1992, the first Monday of October has still been set aside as the National Day of Unity, a time to honor those lost, uplift those who survived, and strengthen connections among advocates fighting for change.

00:02:58.780 --> 00:03:01.979
This year, that day falls on October 6th.

00:03:02.219 --> 00:03:07.900
Another important date is Purple Thursday, happening this year on October 16th.

00:03:08.219 --> 00:03:20.699
Much like pink days for breast cancer awareness, Purple Thursday is a chance for all of us to wear purple and show support for victims and survivors of this invisible pandemic.

00:03:21.020 --> 00:03:31.180
To show how strong our movement is, don your purple, snap a picture, and share it online with hashtag DVAM.

00:03:31.419 --> 00:03:35.900
I'd love it if you threw in a hashtag one in three podcast as well.

00:03:36.460 --> 00:03:38.939
And finally, big news.

00:03:39.180 --> 00:03:41.099
One in three merch is here.

00:03:41.259 --> 00:03:51.099
We have t-shirts, sweatshirts, and more featuring the purple domestic violence awareness ribbon and the powerful message: you are not alone.

00:03:51.580 --> 00:03:56.860
Most designs come with the option of black, gray, or purple backgrounds.

00:03:57.099 --> 00:03:59.659
