00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:25.687
Hi Warriors, welcome to 1 in 3.

00:00:25.687 --> 00:00:26.951
I'm your host, ingrid.

00:00:26.951 --> 00:00:30.725
Some of the stories I have presented ended tragically.

00:00:30.725 --> 00:00:38.614
In too many of those circumstances, the outcome occurred despite the victim following all recommendations to ensure their safety.

00:00:38.614 --> 00:00:41.840
My apologies, but today is no different.

00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:45.501
This is the story of Deanna Cook.

00:00:46.281 --> 00:01:03.006
Deanna Cook was born to Vicki Cook and Mark Thompson in June of 1980.

00:01:03.006 --> 00:01:08.207
Deanna Cook was born to Vicki Cook and Mark Thompson in June of 1980.

00:01:08.207 --> 00:01:16.049
The oldest of four girls, deanna quickly adapted to the role of the oldest child, assisting her single mother throughout her childhood.

00:01:16.049 --> 00:01:23.652
In high school, deanna was known to be very athletic and did well in track and field for her South Cliff high school team.

00:01:23.652 --> 00:01:27.253
She was described as beautiful, with an infectious laugh.

00:01:27.253 --> 00:01:31.194
She had high aspirations of becoming a model or an author.

00:01:31.194 --> 00:01:34.975
At the age of 16 years, deanna had her first daughter.

00:01:34.975 --> 00:01:38.917
She welcomed her second daughter two years later, at the age of 18.

00:01:38.917 --> 00:01:45.438
She was a good mother and did everything she could to provide a loving, stable environment for her girls.

00:01:45.438 --> 00:01:52.305
She moved her daughters to a cute home in a nicer area located in South Dallas.

00:01:52.305 --> 00:02:07.049
She eventually met Delvecchio Patrick, who was five and a half years her elder, despite his previous charges of aggravated assault in 1994 and possession of cocaine in 2007, deanna began a romantic relationship with him.

00:02:07.990 --> 00:02:13.268
The relationship was violent from the beginning and Delvecchio would often physically abuse Deanna.

00:02:13.268 --> 00:02:17.663
She hoped marriage would change as they married in 2008.

00:02:17.663 --> 00:02:26.644
Interjection time so many of us hope different circumstances can or will change our partner's behavior.

00:02:26.644 --> 00:02:28.269
But here's the thing.

00:02:28.269 --> 00:02:31.862
Their behavior is because of what's inside of them.

00:02:31.862 --> 00:02:35.008
It's not because of external influences.

00:02:35.008 --> 00:02:44.473
Getting married, having children, moving to a different location or changing professions will not fix them or your relationship.

00:02:44.473 --> 00:02:48.191
Such was the case for Deanna and Delvecchio.

00:02:48.191 --> 00:02:52.623
His physical abuse continued and progressively worsened.

00:02:53.064 --> 00:02:58.322
The first call to 911 came from one of Deanna's friends in January of 2009.

00:02:58.322 --> 00:03:06.044
Delvecchio had kicked in a bedroom door, grabbed Deanna and held her up against a wall while strangling her.

00:03:06.044 --> 00:03:09.536
Deanna's friend screamed at him to let her go.

00:03:09.536 --> 00:03:15.913
He immediately obliged and grabbed a knife, turning on her friend while threatening to do the same to her.

00:03:15.913 --> 00:03:19.765
The friend ran out of the house and called police.

00:03:20.829 --> 00:03:23.433
I deliberately use the term strangling here.

00:03:23.433 --> 00:03:29.372
Oftentimes, when referring to these situations, people will say choking or choked.

00:03:29.372 --> 00:03:34.451
It may seem very trivial to draw attention to such a simple exchange of words.

00:03:34.451 --> 00:03:40.813
However, choking is the inability to breathe due to an obstruction in the airway.

00:03:40.813 --> 00:03:48.574
Strangling or strangulation is the use of external force or pressure to impede another's ability to breathe.

00:03:48.574 --> 00:03:54.712
It is a deliberate act to seriously harm or even kill someone.

00:03:54.712 --> 00:04:01.932
Personally, I feel using the term choked downplays the malicious intent behind the act.

00:04:01.932 --> 00:04:07.012
So I repeat, delvecchio was strangling Deanna.

00:04:07.800 --> 00:04:12.141
He was subsequently arrested and Deanna filed for a restraining order.

00:04:12.141 --> 00:04:17.411
Del Vecchio was released one month later on a $25,000 bond.

00:04:17.411 --> 00:04:24.129
That very month, in February, he once again strangled Deanna during a fight.

00:04:24.129 --> 00:04:28.869
Following the fight, she was able to successfully kick him out of the house.

00:04:28.869 --> 00:04:35.091
In March, it was documented that he called her hundreds of times with threats.

00:04:35.091 --> 00:04:46.189
Some of those threats included killing her, killing her in front of her daughters, killing her mother and having his friends sexually assault her daughters.

00:04:46.189 --> 00:04:56.201
I'm going to attempt to summarize what happened over the next few months, but the accounts get a little fuzzy with the exact timeline and details of what happens.

00:04:57.223 --> 00:04:59.689
Delvecchio continued to stalk Deanna.

00:04:59.689 --> 00:05:05.182
In August, he strangled her again and was arrested a second time.

00:05:05.182 --> 00:05:16.273
At this point, there is still no restraining order that was granted due to Delvecchio being in and out of jail and possible lack of follow-up on Deanna's part.

00:05:16.273 --> 00:05:20.687
In October of 2009, deanna filed for divorce.

00:05:20.687 --> 00:05:24.053
Naturally, delvecchio wouldn't sign the papers.

00:05:24.053 --> 00:05:35.471
She wrote letters to the court detailing her plight and asking for assistance in granting the divorce or restraining order or something for God's sake.

00:05:35.471 --> 00:05:40.911
But instead a judge eventually dismissed Delvecchio's case.

00:05:42.555 --> 00:05:49.509
Deanna, in just her bra and underwear, ran screaming to her neighbor's house one evening in March of 2010.

00:05:49.509 --> 00:05:51.120
She was repeating.

00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:59.088
The neighbor took Deanna into her home after seeing Delvecchio standing in Deanna's yard.

00:05:59.088 --> 00:06:10.281
Meanwhile that same evening, in another part of town, an employee saw what appeared to be an injured Delvecchio sitting in a La Quinta Motel lobby.

00:06:10.281 --> 00:06:13.988
That employee called the police, who took Delvecchio's statement.

00:06:13.988 --> 00:06:26.004
Is it any surprise that he explained his shoulder and facial wounds were from Deanna attacking him, despite his long criminal history, including at least two arrests for domestic violence?

00:06:26.004 --> 00:06:29.598
Police found Deanna and arrested her.

00:06:31.141 --> 00:06:34.848
Now I'm definitely missing some information here, but Deanna was released.

00:06:34.848 --> 00:06:44.439
I'm not sure if the charges were dropped or not and at some point Delvacchio was arrested again, but I can't find if those charges were related.

00:06:44.439 --> 00:06:51.899
Regardless, this time he remained behind bars for one year and guess what?

00:06:51.899 --> 00:06:59.600
As soon as he was released, del Vecchio returned to harassing, stalking and terrorizing Deanna.

00:06:59.600 --> 00:07:08.836
Police arrived to Deanna's house in May of 2011, just two months following Del Vecchio's release to find her with knife wounds.

00:07:08.836 --> 00:07:16.795
She reported he had drug her by her hair, cut her with a knife, hit her and threatened her with a crowbar.

00:07:16.795 --> 00:07:19.439
He was arrested again.

00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:23.423
Deanna tried to file for divorce again.

00:07:23.423 --> 00:07:28.187
Finally, this time, a judge granted it.

00:07:28.187 --> 00:07:32.576
Their divorce was finalized in January of 2012.

00:07:33.538 --> 00:07:45.004
Okay, I know I'm repeating myself here, but Delvecchio was released and returned to stalking Deanna Per her call to police in May of 2012,.

00:07:45.004 --> 00:07:48.168
He had called her over 100 times.

00:07:48.168 --> 00:07:54.617
July 28, 2012, deanna called the police twice that morning.

00:07:54.617 --> 00:07:57.425
Delvecchio had knocked on her door and threatened her.

00:07:57.425 --> 00:08:09.944
The second time she called was later that day, on her way to work, after seeing him standing in the park directly across from her house, she simply wanted police to remove him from the area.

00:08:09.944 --> 00:08:15.047
When they arrived, they dropped him off at a family member's house just down the road.

00:08:15.047 --> 00:08:24.007
Unfortunately, they couldn't arrest him for violation of a restraining order because there still was no restraining order granted.

00:08:24.935 --> 00:08:30.877
Vicky and Deanna met at church on August 12, 2012, which was their normal routine.

00:08:30.877 --> 00:08:35.405
What was not normal was that Delvecchio accompanied Deanna.

00:08:35.405 --> 00:08:37.456
He never went to church.

00:08:37.456 --> 00:08:43.266
A few days later, vicki noticed another abnormality in Deanna's routine.

00:08:43.266 --> 00:08:48.915
The two had set up a daily call around 10 am during Deanna's commute into work.

00:08:48.915 --> 00:08:54.866
Just a quick side note here this daily check-in is a really good idea.

00:08:54.866 --> 00:09:10.803
I know I have mentioned it in previous episodes, but when you are in a violent and unstable relationship or, like in this case, a dangerous situation, despite removing yourself from the relationship, check in with someone regularly.

00:09:10.803 --> 00:09:19.628
And here's why On August 18, 2012, deanna didn't answer her mom's calls or texts.

00:09:20.695 --> 00:09:26.514
Vicki tried to downplay her concern initially, but Deanna had also not posted on social media.

00:09:26.514 --> 00:09:31.586
The concerned mom contacted Deanna's friends, even Delvecchio.

00:09:31.586 --> 00:09:38.505
He mentioned not speaking to Deanna for about four days and, over his concern with this, he sent friends to go check on her.

00:09:38.505 --> 00:09:44.366
The following day was a Sunday and Deanna did not show up to church.

00:09:44.366 --> 00:09:47.243
Now this was the last straw for Vicki.

00:09:47.243 --> 00:09:49.601
She knew something was wrong.

00:09:50.534 --> 00:09:58.222
After church she, along with Deanna's two teenage daughters and one of Deanna's sisters, went to Deanna's house.

00:09:58.222 --> 00:10:01.956
Immediately they noticed something was amiss.

00:10:01.956 --> 00:10:06.784
Deanna's dog was barking incessantly in the backyard.

00:10:06.784 --> 00:10:11.197
Stranger still, water was pouring out of the garage.

00:10:11.197 --> 00:10:15.221
Vicky instantly called the police for a welfare check.

00:10:15.221 --> 00:10:22.551
She explained the scene at the house, deanna's history with Delvecchio and the fact no one had heard from her in days.

00:10:22.551 --> 00:10:38.845
The operator insisted that nothing would be done, however, until the family called local hospitals and jails first.

00:10:38.845 --> 00:10:42.416
Once the women realized no one was going to come, one of Deanna's daughters jumped the fence and Deanna's sister kicked in the door.

00:10:42.416 --> 00:10:45.746
The scene that awaited them was horrific.

00:10:46.710 --> 00:10:50.885
I'm not going to get into the details because I'm not about the dramatization.

00:10:50.885 --> 00:10:56.381
What I do want to bring up is a breakdown of the days leading up to this discovery.

00:10:56.381 --> 00:11:03.702
On August 16th, deanna called the police again because Delvecchio was across the street from her house.

00:11:03.702 --> 00:11:08.717
Again, she explained her history with Delvecchio over the last few years.

00:11:08.717 --> 00:11:17.067
Again, at this point it's really difficult to count how many times Deanna actually had contacted the police regarding Delvecchio.

00:11:17.067 --> 00:11:35.197
In fact, she even called him on the day she was murdered and screaming for her life, along with sounds of a struggle.

00:11:35.197 --> 00:11:43.336
When the police finally arrived, about 50, that's 50, five zero minutes later, they knocked on the door and left when no one answered.

00:11:44.698 --> 00:11:48.625
Okay, so all the legal stuff leading to Deanna's murder was a mess.

00:11:48.625 --> 00:11:52.332
Well, the investigation and the trial were too.

00:11:52.332 --> 00:12:01.799
There was a great display of victim blaming, of course, as well as drawing attention to Deanna's possible history of mental illness, of course.

00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:04.144
Despite all of this.

00:12:04.144 --> 00:12:09.059
Thankfully, delvecchio was found guilty for first-degree murder.

00:12:09.059 --> 00:12:13.070
He was sentenced to 85 years in prison.

00:12:13.912 --> 00:12:20.788
Deanna's case gained attention from the community and media Because of the persistence of her mother and daughters.

00:12:20.788 --> 00:12:32.607
There were personnel changes and multiple other improvements made to the 911 reporting system, one of which included the mandatory prioritization of domestic violence calls.

00:12:32.607 --> 00:12:44.889
This is a tragic story and I really wish it had a different ending, but this is a prime example of how we need to continue to advocate for ourselves and each other.

00:12:44.889 --> 00:12:55.063
Let's follow the road that Deanna's mother and daughters have paved and insist changes be made in this dark world of domestic violence.

00:12:55.063 --> 00:12:57.562
Thank you for listening.

00:12:57.562 --> 00:13:01.586
