00:00:23.760 --> 00:00:25.826
Hi Warriors, welcome to 1 in 3.
00:00:25.826 --> 00:00:27.170
I'm your host, ingrid.
00:00:27.170 --> 00:00:31.030
The story I'm going to tell you today may sound familiar to some.
00:00:31.030 --> 00:00:34.668
That's because it evolves into a case that made history.
00:00:34.668 --> 00:00:42.493
History, since this is the first time a woman was charged with murdering her same sex spouse in the state of Massachusetts.
00:00:42.493 --> 00:00:48.524
This is the story of Anna Marie Cochran-Rintala and Kara Rintala.
00:01:03.781 --> 00:01:10.373
In my first episode, i explained how domestic violence affects everyone, regardless of gender or sexuality.
00:01:10.373 --> 00:01:21.479
In just the few episodes since then, it has become quite clear how both men and women in heterosexual relationships are capable of being the victim or the abuser.
00:01:21.479 --> 00:01:29.233
The LGBTQ community is also largely affected and, in fact, faces additional difficulties.
00:01:29.233 --> 00:01:36.953
Intimate partner violence within this subgroup occurs at an equal amount, if not more, than the heterosexual subgroup.
00:01:36.953 --> 00:01:54.480
According to the National Coalition of Domestic Violence, 43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women have experienced rape, physical violence and or stalking, compared to 35% of heterosexual women.
00:01:54.480 --> 00:02:09.016
Within their lifetime, 26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced rape, physical violence and or stalking by an intimate partner, compared to 29% of heterosexual men.
00:02:09.016 --> 00:02:18.500
According to data from 2012, there were less than 5% of LGBTQ survivors who attempted to obtain orders of protection.
00:02:18.500 --> 00:02:24.432
I mentioned Unique Hurdles the LGBTQ community faces in dealing with domestic violence.
00:02:24.432 --> 00:02:27.500
I have to be honest, i didn't even think of this one.
00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:32.972
Threats to quote out their partner to family, jobs, public, etc.
00:02:32.972 --> 00:02:39.372
Of course, this specific concern could play a role in the victim's reluctancy to seek help.
00:02:39.372 --> 00:02:45.812
In addition to this previous trauma from bullying or hate crimes may deter asking for help.
00:02:45.812 --> 00:02:55.174
And even beyond these obstacles, transgender victims have a higher likelihood of harassment, intimidation and threats.
00:02:55.174 --> 00:03:02.294
Prejudice against or misunderstanding of the LGBTQ lifestyle may also hinder how cases are handled.
00:03:02.294 --> 00:03:05.288
And that brings me to today's story.
00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:13.473
Anna Marie was born in Springfield, massachusetts, on July 30, 1972 to a large Irish-Italian family.
00:03:13.473 --> 00:03:24.347
She attended Catholic High School and it was during her teenage years she unintentionally quote came out One evening when she was 16 years old.
00:03:24.347 --> 00:03:25.911
She didn't come home on time.
00:03:25.911 --> 00:03:30.270
Now, this was 1988 and the age before cell phones.
00:03:30.270 --> 00:03:34.991
Her worried parents hopped in the car and drove around town to try and find her.
00:03:34.991 --> 00:03:41.032
As they cruised along the streets, they noticed her car in the parking lot of a seedy motel.
00:03:41.032 --> 00:03:57.014
Being the kind of parents who wanted to make sure she was okay but also didn't want to see or confront what was behind that closed door, they asked Anna Marie's uncle, pasquale Martin, or as Anna Marie called him, uncle Pat, to check things out for them.
00:03:57.014 --> 00:04:00.729
Uncle Pat was more than happy to oblige.
00:04:00.729 --> 00:04:05.669
After informing the motel clerk, there was an underage girl in one of the rooms.
00:04:05.669 --> 00:04:07.353
He was promptly given the key.
00:04:07.353 --> 00:04:18.989
He marched to the room, pounded on the door and said quote Annie, come out right now and bring out whatever filthy bastard dragged you in there, so I can tell him.
00:04:18.989 --> 00:04:23.475
Uncle Pat says he's never going to lay a finger on you again.
00:04:23.475 --> 00:04:24.885
End quote.
00:04:24.885 --> 00:04:27.866
Anna Marie tried to tell her uncle.
00:04:27.866 --> 00:04:29.290
It wasn't what he thought.
00:04:29.290 --> 00:04:33.069
He ignored her and promised not to punch the guy.
00:04:33.069 --> 00:04:36.500
Anna Marie came out of the room reluctantly.
00:04:36.500 --> 00:04:43.833
Uncle Pat was briefly puzzled as she held open the door for a girl to walk out.
00:04:45.321 --> 00:04:52.334
Yes, anna Marie had a large Catholic family, but they all accepted her sexuality.
00:04:52.334 --> 00:04:57.677
Their acceptance, especially in the 80s, is a true testament of their love for her.
00:04:57.677 --> 00:04:59.942
But everyone loved Annemarie.
00:04:59.942 --> 00:05:04.814
She was described as impulsive, boisterous, outgoing and loud.
00:05:04.814 --> 00:05:12.482
She loved laughing, making people laugh, photography, scuba diving, notre Dame football and travel.
00:05:12.482 --> 00:05:25.365
She wore a bedazzled Michael Jackson glove when she was younger And always near the center of attention at weddings, she was known to grab the microphone and sing Mambo Italiano.
00:05:25.365 --> 00:05:29.035
Her motto was live, laugh, love.
00:05:29.035 --> 00:05:33.665
Her love for people was evident as she worked toward and became an EMT.
00:05:33.665 --> 00:05:40.144
On cold nights she would often bring blankets to the homeless and would even drive them to shelters.
00:05:40.786 --> 00:05:49.423
Given Annemarie's larger-than-life personality, it's no wonder people were surprised when she began dating fellow paramedic Cara Rintala.
00:05:49.423 --> 00:05:53.132
Cara was Annemarie's six-year senior.
00:05:53.132 --> 00:05:59.149
While much of Cara isn't known, she was described as aloof, quiet and reserved.
00:05:59.149 --> 00:06:05.708
Her emotions were guarded and difficult to figure out, while Annemarie wore her heart on her sleeve.
00:06:05.708 --> 00:06:09.338
The two met and fell in love in 2002.
00:06:09.338 --> 00:06:18.867
With an outward appearance of a beautiful relationship, the two began to live together when Annemarie moved into Cara's grand-by-home in 2005.
00:06:18.867 --> 00:06:23.822
Two years later, they adopted a newborn infant and named her Brianna.
00:06:23.822 --> 00:06:30.163
Massachusetts was the first American state to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004.
00:06:30.163 --> 00:06:34.415
The pair traveled to Provincetown, therefore, to get married.
00:06:35.057 --> 00:06:38.889
Stable jobs and a growing family don't make a perfect marriage, though.
00:06:38.889 --> 00:06:55.574
Annemarie, being impulsive along with her love for travel and passion for photography a potentially expensive hobby began to quickly run up credit card debt, and that debt was substantial, thousands of dollars.
00:06:55.574 --> 00:07:03.233
I read she had even reached a $20,000 balance on a credit card she had taken out in Cara's name.
00:07:03.233 --> 00:07:08.452
Naturally, with this amount of debt, the two began to argue about finances.
00:07:08.452 --> 00:07:12.985
If you recall, financial abuse is a form of domestic abuse.
00:07:12.985 --> 00:07:21.935
Financial abuse is when one incurs mutual debt at the opposition of the partner and or acquires debt without the other's knowledge.
00:07:21.935 --> 00:07:25.125
Cara objected to Annemarie's reckless spending.
00:07:25.125 --> 00:07:31.846
If you're reluctant to call this abuse, it is, at the very least, a source of major stress.
00:07:31.846 --> 00:07:36.279
Physical violence, however, is undoubtedly domestic abuse.
00:07:37.584 --> 00:07:46.732
Annemarie filed for a restraining order against Cara in September 2008, after Cara had hit her in the head with a spatula and her closed fist.
00:07:46.732 --> 00:07:49.660
Shortly after Annemarie presented a file, cara arrived.
00:07:49.660 --> 00:07:55.420
She attempted to tell her side of the story, but was ultimately arrested for assaults and battery.
00:07:55.420 --> 00:08:00.612
Annemarie, however, ended up dropping the charges.
00:08:00.612 --> 00:08:06.466
Less than a year, on May 12, 2009, 9-1-1 was called from the women's home.
00:08:06.466 --> 00:08:13.425
In the background, the dispatcher heard a woman screaming just leave, just leave.
00:08:13.425 --> 00:08:19.483
Both women, however, informed police when they arrived that their daughter had accidentally called.
00:08:19.483 --> 00:08:23.153
That same day, cara filed for divorce.
00:08:24.461 --> 00:08:29.410
14 days later, on May 26, another call was made to 9-1-1.
00:08:29.410 --> 00:08:34.844
This time, it was clearly Cara who called Through mumbled sobs.
00:08:34.844 --> 00:08:39.865
The dispatcher could only make out she was threatening to take my daughter from me.
00:08:39.865 --> 00:08:44.221
I'm being threatened, i can't get a hold of my lawyers.
00:08:44.221 --> 00:08:45.625
I need help.
00:08:46.827 --> 00:08:51.339
That very day, they each attempted to file restraining orders on each other.
00:08:51.339 --> 00:09:00.869
Judge John Payne listened patiently as Cara voiced concerns that Annemarie would take away her livelihood, her home and her daughter.
00:09:00.869 --> 00:09:03.235
She said I don't know what to do.
00:09:03.235 --> 00:09:04.278
I'm afraid.
00:09:04.278 --> 00:09:06.606
I'm afraid to be in my own house.
00:09:06.606 --> 00:09:10.460
Judge Payne, however, didn't grant a restraining order to either woman.
00:09:10.460 --> 00:09:20.352
He lectured the two on how they were raising their daughter in an abusive home and he wasn't sure either one of them were stable enough to be the parents.
00:09:20.352 --> 00:09:26.836
He vowed to involve the Department of Children and Families if he ever saw them in his court again.
00:09:26.836 --> 00:09:31.429
The two women left and ultimately separated.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:37.923
In just the next month, anna Marie began a relationship with a female police officer named Carla.
00:09:37.923 --> 00:09:45.173
That relationship took off quickly as Anna Marie moved into Carla's home in South Hadley in August.
00:09:45.173 --> 00:09:48.166
The romance ended just as quickly.
00:09:48.166 --> 00:09:57.628
After Anna Marie had accumulated $10,000 on Carla's credit cards, anna Marie left in November and moved back in with Cara.
00:09:57.628 --> 00:10:02.389
The two had reconciled and decided to work on their relationship.
00:10:02.389 --> 00:10:16.525
And what's more romantic than a cruise in the Caribbean, even with debt now nearing $100,000, that's what the pair decided to do In February 2010,.
00:10:16.525 --> 00:10:19.157
They traveled to visit Anna Marie's aunt in Florida.
00:10:19.157 --> 00:10:25.308
Before departing on the cruise, anna noticed the couple seemed icy toward each other.
00:10:25.308 --> 00:10:37.410
She recalled at one point Anna Marie running out of the room crying after Cara said Why would someone like this want to take someone like that to the beach?
00:10:37.410 --> 00:10:42.090
Now, at some point, each of the women developed friendships with men.
00:10:42.090 --> 00:10:47.211
For the most part, i found these relationships to be described as strictly platonic.
00:10:47.211 --> 00:10:52.932
However, a few sources hinted at a possibility of there being some sexual involvement.
00:10:53.620 --> 00:11:01.904
What is indisputably known was that Cara's male friend, mike, had come over to visit on the evening of March 28, 2010,.
00:11:01.904 --> 00:11:10.129
While Anna Marie was working overnight in Springfield, cara texted Anna Marie to let her know Mike had come over with a six pack.
00:11:10.129 --> 00:11:21.284
Immediately, anna Marie became upset, texting in all caps quote It is becoming very clear how you feel about me.
00:11:21.284 --> 00:11:23.505
I don't like feeling this way.
00:11:23.505 --> 00:11:24.903
You are my wife.
00:11:24.903 --> 00:11:27.306
I hate the relationship we have.
00:11:27.306 --> 00:11:30.722
Cara responded quote.
00:11:30.722 --> 00:11:34.910
Okay, you being over the top and crazy for no reason.
00:11:34.910 --> 00:11:36.254
It's okay.
00:11:36.254 --> 00:11:40.744
He's my friend Period Not doing anything wrong.
00:11:40.744 --> 00:11:45.509
Anna Marie replied quote You are rude.
00:11:45.509 --> 00:11:46.864
I'm gonna leave.
00:11:46.864 --> 00:11:48.604
You don't give a shit.
00:11:48.604 --> 00:11:50.927
You are rude and disrespectful.
00:11:50.927 --> 00:11:54.346
Okay, yikes, right.
00:11:54.346 --> 00:12:12.951
What makes this conversation even more strange, or even hypocritical, was that Anna Marie had been messaging her male friend and colleague, mark, to make plans for him to come over while Cara would be working, and overnight just a few nights later.
00:12:12.951 --> 00:12:23.989
Despite Mark being married, he and Ann Marie had a very close relationship, so much so Mark had given Ann Marie a credit card.
00:12:23.989 --> 00:12:28.302
She immediately rented up to $7,000.
00:12:28.302 --> 00:12:32.373
Okay, so back to that night.
00:12:33.644 --> 00:12:38.096
Eventually, the argument over text had ended, as did Anna Marie's shift.
00:12:38.096 --> 00:12:40.890
She returned home after 8am.
00:12:40.890 --> 00:12:52.952
Anna Marie wasn't able to catch up on sleep right away, though, because Kara was called in by the Ludlow Fire Department, but she was able to return home by 11am.
00:12:52.952 --> 00:13:02.452
If you have ever worked overnight and have children, you can understand how difficult it can be to get adequate sleep when you get home.
00:13:02.452 --> 00:13:09.090
Kara decided she would take their 2 year old out to run errands in order to allow Anna Marie to get some sleep.
00:13:10.004 --> 00:13:12.613
The mother and daughter left the house around 3pm.
00:13:12.613 --> 00:13:16.974
Their activities from there forward are quite detailed.
00:13:16.974 --> 00:13:22.735
It was raining that day, and they first stopped to see llamas in Ludlow.
00:13:22.735 --> 00:13:32.292
After where they arrived at the Hollyoak Mall around 5pm, a surveillance camera caught Kara's pickup truck near the target entrance.
00:13:32.292 --> 00:13:36.855
A laundry basket and red bag is noted in the back of the vehicle.
00:13:36.855 --> 00:13:44.009
Kara and Brianna hit up a few stores in the mall, during which time Kara sent multiple texts to Anna Marie.
00:13:44.009 --> 00:13:46.068
No reply was received.
00:13:46.068 --> 00:13:50.193
After the mall, kara drove the two to McDonald's.
00:13:50.193 --> 00:13:55.787
They didn't order food, but Kara is seen on camera throwing some rags into a garbage can.
00:13:55.787 --> 00:13:59.653
The next stop was at a stop and shop supermarket.
00:13:59.653 --> 00:14:06.767
Still not receiving responses to her texts, kara began calling Anna Marie again, without answer.
00:14:06.767 --> 00:14:13.076
The final stop was Burger King in Chukapi to get Brianna Mac and cheese.
00:14:13.076 --> 00:14:17.615
The laundry basket and bag were still noted to be in the back of the truck.
00:14:17.615 --> 00:14:21.613
The two returned home in Grandby around 7pm.
00:14:22.565 --> 00:14:25.354
Kara found Anna Marie lying on the floor of their basement.
00:14:25.354 --> 00:14:31.924
She immediately rushed Brianna to the neighbor's house and shouted to call 911.
00:14:31.924 --> 00:14:40.211
Three minutes later first responders arrived to find a clearly deceased Anna Marie cradled in the lap of a distraught Kara.
00:14:40.211 --> 00:14:44.352
There was shiny pinkish white paint everywhere.
00:14:44.352 --> 00:14:50.014
The officers, who both knew Kara, let her upstairs and sat her at the kitchen table.
00:14:50.014 --> 00:14:52.610
They asked her what happened.
00:14:52.610 --> 00:14:57.490
Kara told them quote we'd been arguing since yesterday.
00:14:57.490 --> 00:14:59.692
We should never leave each other mad.
00:14:59.692 --> 00:15:10.004
She then proceeded to tell them she had started down the basement stairs and when she saw Annamarie's body she immediately took Brianna next door.
00:15:10.004 --> 00:15:18.041
When she got back to the basement she sat on the floor next to Annamarie, who was laying prone or on her stomach.
00:15:18.041 --> 00:15:25.105
She then rolled her body over so that Annamarie would be face up on her lap.
00:15:25.105 --> 00:15:30.403
Kara mentioned that there was already paint covering everything.
00:15:30.403 --> 00:15:39.360
At that point Kara said something strange, because nobody had suggested this could be anything other than an accident.
00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:46.625
What she said was quote I understand I'm the number one suspect.
00:15:48.075 --> 00:15:50.643
Kara was eventually brought in by police for questioning.
00:15:50.643 --> 00:15:54.504
She was interviewed for two and a half hours at the Granby station.
00:15:54.504 --> 00:16:03.261
She recalled the events of her afternoon with Brianna, but almost immediately she began complaining about her newly deceased wife.
00:16:03.261 --> 00:16:12.263
She mentioned Annamarie was physically abusive, recklessly spent money, was loud, she had a temper, she was lazy, she was manipulative.
00:16:12.263 --> 00:16:21.264
Kara would interrupt herself and admit she felt terrible, saying negative things about her and she felt as if she was betraying Annamarie.
00:16:21.264 --> 00:16:27.144
But then she returned to describing how Annamarie would say hurtful and mean things.
00:16:28.615 --> 00:16:33.725
The autopsy later concluded the cause of death was homicide by strangulation.
00:16:33.725 --> 00:16:38.745
Extensive bruising was also noted throughout Annamarie's body.
00:16:38.745 --> 00:16:43.323
The rags from the McDonald's trash can were collected and tested.
00:16:43.323 --> 00:16:50.043
As there was a faint blood stain noted, it was determined Annamarie was a potential contributor.
00:16:50.043 --> 00:16:58.626
Kara was later indicted on October 19, 2011, which is one and a half years later.
00:16:59.995 --> 00:17:07.728
Kara's first two trials, in 2013 and 2014, were deemed mistrials due to a hung jury both times.
00:17:07.728 --> 00:17:12.764
Her third trial, in 2016, resulted in a conviction.
00:17:12.764 --> 00:17:17.282
She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
00:17:17.282 --> 00:17:23.224
In 2021, her conviction was overturned.
00:17:23.224 --> 00:17:30.939
The ruling was following further investigation of the prosecution's witness regarding timing of the paint drying.
00:17:30.939 --> 00:17:37.978
It was felt the expert didn't perform an actual study in order to determine what time the paint was spilled.
00:17:37.978 --> 00:17:43.346
$50,000 cash bail was posted in November 2021.
00:17:43.346 --> 00:17:52.986
Kara is now living with her parents and daughter, but she is to sit for her fourth trial in September of this year.
00:17:55.478 --> 00:18:08.186
Now I left a lot of speculation and investigation details out because this is a domestic violence podcast and the purpose of this episode is not to determine who killed Annamarie.
00:18:08.186 --> 00:18:15.166
This is a story of a lesbian couple in which both partners displayed abusive behavior.
00:18:15.166 --> 00:18:25.723
Earlier, i alluded to the idea that because Annamarie and Kara were lesbians, their situation may have been handled differently or with prejudice.
00:18:25.723 --> 00:18:34.657
Now, of course, this is pure speculation on my part, but I do feel that may have been the case, and let me tell you why.
00:18:34.657 --> 00:18:46.809
I think that Each woman had unsuccessfully attempted to file a restraining order on the other, so this would be more of a gender-based issue versus a same-sex couple.
00:18:46.809 --> 00:18:53.826
Perhaps the authorities involved failed to recognize women as potential threats to another.
00:18:56.017 --> 00:18:59.665
Let's also think about what would have happened if Kara were a man.
00:18:59.665 --> 00:19:04.265
Would there have been one, let alone two, hungjuries?
00:19:04.265 --> 00:19:10.928
Would there be persistence in the attempt to seal a conviction going to four trials?
00:19:10.928 --> 00:19:17.929
We know the district attorney at the time of the murder was a female and a big supporter of same-sex marriage.
00:19:17.929 --> 00:19:21.484
Did she deliberately hold off on pursuing the case?
00:19:21.484 --> 00:19:27.968
Kara wasn't arrested until a new male district attorney was elected.
00:19:28.596 --> 00:19:39.888
There is a lot of controversy and speculation surrounding this case, but ultimately it's a sad story of escalating domestic abuse, really from both partners.
00:19:39.888 --> 00:19:48.648
It may have even escalated into murder, but we won't know that results until later this year at the earliest.
00:19:48.648 --> 00:20:00.150
Before I close, i want to say thank you to Ashley for adding the song Feel Like This by Ingrid Andrus to our 1-in-3 playlist on Spotify.
00:20:00.150 --> 00:20:06.928

00:20:06.928 --> 00:20:10.905
